Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the optimal shading levels for producing healthy seedlings of P. tobira, one of Korean nativeplants for garden. Three shading levels were applied: 0% (T ), 55% (T055), 75% (T75). We measured height and root collar diameter(RCD)growth, number of leaves, biomass, Seedling Quality Index (SQI), and chlorophyll contents. The height growth and biomass were statistically significantly highest in T75 (p ˃ 0.05), while there were no significant statistical differences in RCD growth and leaf number among the treatments (p ˂ 0.05). SQI was also statistically highest in T75 (p ˂ 0.05), showing an increase of over 45% compared to the other two treatments. The chlorophyll a and b, the a/b ratio, and total chlorophyll content were statistically significantly highest in T75 (p ˂ 0.05). The results of this study indicate that P. tobira seedlings showed the best height growth, biomass, SQI, and chlorophyll contents at T75, suggesting that this could serve as a foundational basis for establishing a seedling production system for P. tobira
