(Francis Raymond de Sauvetat, the Archbishop of Toledo, 1125-1152)의 교회의 후원과 현왕 알폰소10세(Alfonso X, the Learned, 1222-1284)의 왕실의 후원으로 나누어 번역 후원 양상을 고찰하고 그 함의를 모색하도록 한다.
Abstract
The culture of Ancient Greece was translated into Arabic in Bagdad from the ninth century, and it helped enrich Islamic civilization. And the Islamic culture, in turn, was translated into Latin and the Romance languages in cities like Córdoba and Toledo on the Iberia Peninsula starting from the eleventh century, which contributed to the development of European culture. According to Tsuji Yumi (2008: 50), “one cannot talk about European translation history without referring to the translation activities byMuslims that preserved the culture of Greece and by people of Toledo, a major gateway to Arab civilization.” Toledo and other cities were able to become translation centers in the medieval times in part because they were home to linguistic and cultural talents. But more importantly, it’s because those talents received patronage of religious and political purposes. As for the translation activities in Toledo, however, the main academic focus has been on translators, their translated works and whether the school of translators (La Escuela de Traductores), actually existed. Therefore, this paper examines how patronage worked in Toledo at that time and what significance it held, after separating religious patronage given by Francis Raymond de Sauvetat, the Archbishop of Toledo, from political patronage by Alfonso X, the Learned, based on the Lefevere’s definition of patronage.
