루벤 다리오의 <푸름...>과 칠레의 근대

이 글은 1888년 칠레에서 발간된 루벤 다리오의 <푸름...>을 다룬다. 다리오는 1886년 칠레에 갔고, 그곳에서 처음으로 근대와 조우했다. 다리오에게 산티아고의 발전상과 발파라이소의 코스모폴리턴한 분위기는 너무나 인상적이었고, 그 근대성의 경험이 <푸름...>의 여러 텍스트, 특히 산문에 고스란히 남았다. 이는 <푸름...>에 대한 재평가의 필요성을 제기한다. 물론 <푸름...>은 다리오 개인적으로 최초의 의미 있는 작품으로, 또 모데르니스모의 시발점이 된 작품으로 문학사에서 중요하게 언급되어 왔다. 그러나 다리오와 모데르니스모를 대표하는 작품으로는 <세속적 세퀜티아 외>(1896)와 <삶과 희망의 노래>(1905) 등을 꼽는 것이 보통이었다. 하지만 ‘모데르니스모’라는 단어의 사전적인 뜻인 ‘근대주의’라는 관점에서 볼 때, <푸름...>의 중요성을 다리오의 후기작들에 비해 결코 뒤지지 않는다. 근대로 접어든 라틴아메리카 사회의 변화상을 이미 포착하고 있기 때문이다. <푸름...>이 다리오를 늘 따라다녔던 비판, 즉 현실을 도외시하고 지나치게 프랑스풍 작가라는 비판을 불식시키는 면모를 보이는 점도 이 작품의 재평가가 필요한 대목이다. 비록 칠레 현실에서 추출한 라틴아메리카 근대에 대한 다리오의 비판의식이 한계가 있지만, 독자 입장에서 볼 때 그의 작품 중에서 <푸름...>만큼 근대의 여러 양상을 쉽게 포착할 수 있는 작품도 없기 때문이다.
Abstract
This article is going to analyze Rubén Darío’s Azul..., published in Chile in 1888. Darío went to Chile in 1886 and there he faced modernity practically for the first time. The development of Santiago and the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Valparaíso were so impressive that Darío left numerous references to Chilean modernity. Furthermore, sometimes, he approaches reality with a critical spirit that would hardly be reiterated in his later works. The final objective of this article will be to propose the need for revaluation regarding Darío and Azul..., since at least this work is not merely immersed in the renovation of the poetic form nor sustains an escapism from the reality.
