초록

본 연구는 98세대 풍경 미학에 나타난 인상주의의 특징과 의의를 살펴보고자 한다. 인상주의자는 고정된 사물을 묘사하던 전통 미학에서 벗어나, 변화하는 자연가운데 캔버스를 두었고, 사물이 빛, 시간, 관찰자의 시각에 따라 변화한다는 사실을 발견하였다. 주체와 자연과의 직접적인 만남에서 탄생한 인상주의는 스페인의 전반적인 예술분야, 교육제도, 사회질서에 커다란 영향을 주었다. 예술가는 새로운 점묘법으로 자연의 순간성과 상대성을 표현함으로써 가톨릭에 입각한 절대주의적 세계관에 충격을 주었다. 이 시기의 98세대 자유주의 교육자는 자연탐구, 야외스케치, 문화탐방을 장려함으로써 스페인 국민의 주체적 사고와 실증주의적 관점을 고양시켰다. 또한, 지식인은 보수주의 정치체제의 한계를 지적하였고 비판적 시민정신의 필요성을 주장하였다. 본 논문은 98세대의 풍경 미학과 인상주의의 연관성을 살펴보고, 이에 반영된 전통적 국가관에 대한 위기의식과 근대시민정신에 입각한 새로운 자유주의 사회상에 대한 필요성을 고찰해 보고자 한다.

Abstract

This study discusses the impressionist elements in Spanish landscape in the late 19th century. In the esthetic aspect, it celebrated a new genre of ‘plein air paintings.’ Instead of describing the object, it emphasizes the fact that the object’s image changes according to the diverse effects of the Nature and observer’s subjective perspective. On the other hand, in the socio-political aspect, the impressionist relativism provoked significant controversies against the political absolutism and the traditional Catholicism. At the same time, the new emphasis on the subjective way of looking at the Nature played an important role of enhancing the consciousness of oneself, individualism, and critical mind. This perceptual transition reflects a strong need of a modern man to put the old belief systems behind and to prepare for a more democratic, secular and modernized society. In this study, we will analyze ‘first Spanish impressionist artists’ who elaborated a new genre of outdoor landscape. They emphasized that an individual must develop the ability of observing the Nature, describing, in his or her own way, the nation’s reality, and also developing the critical thought. We can also observe socio-political transitions between the tradition and modernization in Spain.
