초록

Abstract

Even though the Korean War was a historical momentum stamped by the American patriotism against the menacing power of communism in American society, it has been a “Forgotten War” over the second half of the 20th century. Unlike most of the wars occurred in the 20th century, the Korean War has barely been mentioned in the American literature. Thus, through the Useless Servants written by Ronaldo Hinojosa and A long way from Home written by Gordon Kahn, this research aims to find out the covert meaning of the Latin Americans’ participation in the Korean War and historical significance of the Korean War in the formation and development of the Chicano Movement in 1960. In general, the approach to the Korean War has been either approving the US patriotism by actively taking part in the Korean War or critically reviewing the Chicanos’ involvement in the US military action. It is noteworthy, then, that both works go beyond the traditional understanding of the Korean War in which it serves as a transition point of conscience of Latinos on the American nation. In other words, they show the formation of critical consciousness of Latinos that refers to the resistance to the dominant ideology in American society.
