본 연구는 푸에르토리코의 정체성 담론에서 전환점을 제시한 아나 리디아 베가의 에세이를 주체의 관점에서 분석한다. 구체적으로는 1980년대 에세이에서 시작하여 30여 년간 푸에르토리코의 정치·경제·문화적 현실과 상호작용하며 전개된 칼럼의 궤적을 추적한다. 베가의 담론은 시기별로 다음과 같은 특징적 양상을 보인다. 1980년대에는 개인의 영역을 축소하는 집단 정체성으로부터의 자기 해방을 중요한 과업으로 주장했다. 1990년대에는 제국주의적 역사 서술에 대항하여 직접 역사의 주체가 되어 진실을 탐구하고 이를 문학적으로 형상화한 작업의 의의를 설명한다. 2000년대 들어 미국의 경제적 쇼케이스 전략이 종료됨에 따라 푸에르토리코는 재정 자치권마저 상실하고 노골적인 식민지 경제 체제하에 놓였다. 이러한 맥락에서 베가는 진리를 추구하는 보편적 주체로서 미국 의존적 식민 구조를 타파해나갈 창의적 방법론을 촉구한다. 주목할 점은 개인의 자기해방이라는 초기의 문제의식도, 역사의 주체로서의 보편사적 해방을 추구하는 후기의 문제의식도 주체성의 실천이라는 일관된 맥락 속에 위치한다는 사실이다. 본 연구는 베가의 주체적 사유 과정에서 분기점이 된 역사적 사건들을 교차적으로 분석함으로써, 탈식민적 맥락에서 개인과 집단의 이분법을 초월하는 주체의 확장과 실천을 고찰한다.
Abstract
This study examines Ana Lydia Vega’s essays as a paradigmatic transition in Puerto Rican identity discourse through the theoretical lens of the Subject. Specifically, it traces the trajectory of her discursive practice spanning three decades, beginning with her early essays in the 1980s, as it engages with Puerto Rico's political, economic, and cultural realities. Vega's discourse exhibits distinct characteristics across different periods. In the 1980s, she advocates for ‘libre albedrío’ from collective identity, emphasizing the recuperation of individual autonomy. In the 1990s, she undertakes a quest for historical truth through literary practice, positioning herself as a historical subject in opposition to imperialist historiography. In the 2000s, as Puerto Rico loses fiscal autonomy and becomes explicitly subjected to colonial economic structures following the end of the U.S. economic showcase strategy, Vega continues her critical interrogation of colonial status and dependence on the United States, while calling for creative methodologies as a universal truth-seeking Subject. Significantly, her early emphasis on individual self-liberation evolves through the middle and later periods into a pursuit of universality as a historical subject, maintaining theoretical coherence within the framework of practicing subjectivity. Through an intersectional analysis of historical conjunctures that marked the bifurcation points in Vega’s theoretical trajectory, this study examines the extension of the Subject that transcends the individual-collective dichotomy in the postcolonial context.
