Abstract

Calderón de la Barca's The Matrimonial Dispute between the Soul and the Body employs the allegory of marriage, conflict, divorce, and eventual reconciliation between the soul and the body to represent the entire spiritual journey of a Catholic believer—from birth and earthly life to death, purgatory, and ultimately salvation. Through a sophisticated use of allegorical figures and sensory theatricality, Calderón translates key doctrinal definitions of the Council of Trent—most notably those concerning original sin and justification—into dramatic form. Of particular significance is his nuanced portrayal of the will, which, though wounded by original sin, retains the capacity to respond to and cooperate with prevenient grace. In doing so, Calderón reflects the Catholic position in the polemical debates with Protestant theology over the nature of original sin and the role of free will. Moreover, the play delineates the progressive stages of justification, mapping the transmission of original sin into personal sin and identifying the sacraments necessary at each stage of spiritual restoration. Ultimately, Calderón presents the Eucharist—the sacrament signifying the real presence of Christ—as the culmination and perfection of justification. In this way, the sacramental act conveys Catholic theology and fulfills the central theological and liturgical purpose of the genre.
