초록

This study will explore and describe the impact of Japanese colonial policy, as seen in the content of Korean and Japanese primary school textbooks published in the years between 1910 and 1945. The aim of this project is to compare and contrast the political and educational ideologies projected in the primary school Japanese language textbooks published and used in Korea and Japan during the period of Japanese colonial rule 1910 - 1945). This study utilises critical curriculum theory. Critical Discourse Analysis CDA) is used for analysing the texts, whilst visual grammar analysis, primarily based on Kress & van Leeuwen’s 1996, 2006) theory, is adopted for the visual images. When Korea was colonised, Japanese was imposed as the national language, and Japanese textbooks were used in Korean schools. In order to examine the Japanese language curriculum and textbooks issued under the Japanese educational reform called 'Chosun Education Ordinance'), three data sets were chosen, based on year, level, appropriateness and publisher. The data for analysis consists of the language textbooks Kokugotokuhon levels 2 and 3) that were published by Chosunchongdogbu the Japanese Governor-General of Korea) to be used for Korean students, and the Shougakutokuhon levels 2 and 3) that were published by the Monbusho the Ministry of Education) for Japanese students. By comparing the texts and images in Kokugotokuhon and Shougakutokuhon, this study verifies how the Japanese colonisers projected different subjectivities onto both groups, and promoted their different visions of ideal worlds and ideal citizens, that is, how the colonisers conveyed the Japanese government's ideologies in both Japan and Korea.
