Abstract

A Characteristic and Educational Guidance of Gifted Underachievers This study reviewed conceptions, identification, and intervention methods of gifted underachievers. The most common component of the various definitions of underachievement in gifted students involves identifying a discrepancy between ability and achievement. The common characteristics of gifted underachievers are personality characteristics, internal mediators, differential thinking skills or styles, maladaptive strategies, and positive attributes. The reasons of gifted underachievers are summarized as individual(low self-conception, self-efficacy), home environment(dysfunctional families, authoritative parenting style), and school environment(unconcerned teachers. inadequate curriculum, negative peer attitudes). The instrument for identifying underachieving gifted students are an individual intelligence test, creativity test or inventory and academic achievement test(AIM: Achievement Identification Measure, GAIM: Group Achievement Identification Measure, AIM-TO: Achievement Identification Measure- Teacher Observation). A parent or teachers's interview also can be helpful in identifying underachieving patterns unintentionally maintained at home or in the school. The interventions method reversing gifted underachievement are counseling and instructional interventions. Counseling interventions (individual, group, or family counseling) concentrate on changing the personal or family dynamics that contribute to a student's underachievement. Rimm's trifocal model combining counseling and school-centered interventions aimed at combating underachievement that involves parents and school personnel is explained in the concrete. Finally, it is proposed to new research directions about gifted underachievers.
