Abstract

This study identified the aspect of academic ability according to school entrance monthly age, based on national diagnostic assessment of basic competency conducted in March 2010 in South Korea. In this study we made 3871 elementary students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 427 middle school students in grades 1, 2 in 36 elementary and 6 middle schools the subject of study. These were classified into spring, summer, autumn and winter born groups on the basis of month of birth. The other purpose of this study was to analyze whether 'school entrance monthly age effect' can be changed depending on the grade, the level of school and subject. The results of this study were obtained through the following. First, the higher grade and level of school goes up to, the wider 'school entrance monthly age effect' mainly based around basic subjects. In other words, in elementary school level 'school entrance monthly age effect' appeared in the languages and mathematics and in middle school level it was extended to other subjects. Specially the subject in which such phenomenon appeared relatively consistently was a math and 'school entrance monthly age effect' appeared in math was concentrated in girl group. Second, that effect not appeared in third grade of elementary school began to appear in forth grade in all student group and in fifth grade appeared only in academic achievement of girls. This phenomenon continued until the middle school level. Third, in the case of top academic achievement groups 'school entrance monthly age effect' appeared in some subjects of the third and fourth grade.
