Abstract

This study applied narrative inquiry to analyze in depth the experiences and perceptions of students exposed to IB history classes at G Foreign Language High School, Korea’s first public school to operate the IB program for 13 years. Unlike prior policy-focused studies, six interviews were conducted with three second-year students over 10 months in 2024, capturing actual learner voices. Students initially faced cognitive confusion due to inquiry-based, student-centered lessons differing from traditional methods, but gradually adapted, evolving from passive receivers to active constructors of knowledge. In the adaptation phase, they shifted from memorization to thinking-oriented learning, engaging in group discussions and activities like cartoon analysis, which fostered multi-layered historical understanding and collaborative identity. The reflection phase saw students develop as independent researchers via process-driven assessments such as IA (Internal Assessment), recognizing evaluation as an integral part of learning rather than a mere measurement tool. Teacher expertise and relational capacity proved essential for successful adaptation. The findings offer empirical evidence supporting IB history education’s effectiveness in Korea and provide practical implications for designing competency-based curricula and expanding the IB approach nationwide.
