Abstract
This study explored various factors influencing the career maturity of first-year students in general and vocational high schools in 2023, using data from the 7th year of the Daegu Education Longitudinal Study, and derived relevant policy implications. Machine learning techniques, including Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, XGBoost, and CatBoost, were applied to identify the model with the highest predictive performance for career maturity. The SHAP method was then applied to examine the key factors affecting career maturity predictions. The analysis revealed that creativity and character, self-esteem, resilience, study habits, grit, and digital literacy were common top predictors for both general and vocational high schools. Among these, creativity and character had the greatest influence on general high school students, while social competence was the most influential factor for vocational high school students. Notably, the identification of digital literacy as a major factor indicates that the ability to search for information and adapt to change in the modern digital environment plays a pivotal role in students’ career exploration and planning. Furthermore, while study habits positively influenced career maturity, mathematics achievement and attitudes toward mathematics classes had negative associations, highlighting the need for further research in this area. In addition, the influence of social relationship variables, such as peer and teacher relationships, differed by school type, underscoring the necessity of designing differentiated career guidance policies tailored to each school context.
