본 연구는 실질임금결정 방식에 인구분포를 새로운 설명변수로 추가함으로써, 인구구조의 변화가 노동생산성에 미치는 효과를 분석하였다. 총노동생산성(aggregate labor productivity)은 계측이 어려우므로 장기적으로 실질임금과 같아진다는 점에 착안하여, 경험적 분석에서는 실질임금을 사용하여 총노동생산성을 간접적으로 추정하도록 모형화하였다. 그 결과 노동구조의 변화는 통계적일 뿐 아니라 경제적으로도 총노동생산성에 유의한 효과를 가짐을 알 수 있었다. 특히 현재와 같은 추세로 인구가 변화한다고 가정할 때, 고령화가 본격적으로 진전되는 2020년경 노동생산성은 급격히 감소할 것으로 보인다. 또한 본 연구에서 도입한 실증분석 방법은 인구분포의 효과를 비모수적으로 비교적 간단하게 추정할 수 있다는 점에서, 실질임금 뿐 아니라 다른 거시변수에 인구분포가 미치는 효과를 추정하는 과정에도 손쉽게 이용될 수 있을 것으로 기대 된다.
Abstract
We investigate how aging influences on the aggregate labor productivity in Korea. By introducing population distribution as an additional explanatory variable for real wage, we explicitly estimate how changing population distribution impacts on real wage. Relying on the assumption that real wage is equalized to aggregate labor productivity in the long run, we predict how the aggregate labor productivity will be pronounced as aging progresses in Korea. We find that changing population distribution has an economically and statistically significant impact on the aggregate labor productivity. If the current trend in aging persists, the aggregate labor productivity is estimated to drastically decrease in year 2020. The empirical method we employ in the model is a non-parametric approach that enables to estimate the response of the aggregate labor productivity to the distribution of age, which is more general than the previous approach made in the literature.
