Abstract
This study focused on the story of marriage evasion, which had been passed down in Nohwa-do, Chuja-do, Heuksan-do and Anjua-do, from the perspective that it was related to the way a community member had lived and had been activated as a taboo. It divided into bilateral evasion and unilateral evasion as the name of regions, legends, histories, occupations, folk religions, their sense and cause were analyzed; and islanders' emotions were reviewed. The story of marriage evasion which was heard in islands is a sort of marriage taboo which is a safety device for an island life, that is to say, it is a unique cultural code of ‘the evasion of marriage in an island.’ The word of prohibition, “Do not marry,” for some reasons, is a much stronger code of conduct than the word of action, “Do marry.” Therefore, interpreting the cultural code of ‘marriage evasion' in islands is looking into the other side of residents’ life in the islands. One of marriage evasion stories, which is a bilateral evasion story (A↔B), can be found in the story of people of Nohwa-do which appeared in the name of villages and in the story of people of Chuja-do which appeared in legends and histories both in Chuja-do and Hwanggan-do. The people of the bilateral evasion follow the developed theories, saying, A tree cannot grow on the rock, or they regard each other as on cat-and-dog terms. Meanwhile, the son of Hwang, the martyr, was raised as an adopted son of Oh, a man from Yecho-ri. So Hwang’s family and Oh’s family are misunderstood as a kinship family sometimes. The other story of marriage evasion, which is a unilateral evasion story (A→B→C), can be found in Heuksan-do, Gageo-do and Manje-do; in the story of people in Heuksando which appeared in an aptitude of ‘high,’ ‘normal’ and ‘low’; Woosil or the fence of a village; and in the story of people of Anjua-do which appeared at the Maeuldang, or the shrine to the village deity. As for persons of the unilateral evasion, a woman of Manje-do does not want to marry a man of Gageo-do, and a woman of Gageo-do wants to marry a man of Manje-do, which is an activity to solve the problem of marriage discords. There are other actions in which a man stops people from accessing by building fences with bamboo trees, pretending to break the wind; and the other man blocks people with his back to them, pretending to make a bow to the shrine to the village. The story of marriage evasion, which appeared in the geographical crossover of marital emotion, is a kind of island literature which remembered and recorded aptitude, knowledge, and skills in occupation and which verbalized the frustration and restoration of a community relating to the security of firewood for living. In particular, it is highly valuable in that it is a verbal map which drew up their destiny and that it described their marital emotion through the geographical crossover between islands.
