근대기 孟骨島民의 收稅抵抗과 土地所有權의 변화

Abstract

This study investigates the island residents' taxation resistance movement thatprogressed in Maenggoldo around the modern period. The island, together withmany other islands distributed in the Southwest sea, had been managed by theHaenam Yun family for generations as their own Dojang(farm). Based on this,this study intends to investigate how the taxation resistance movement in theislands arose during the modern and contemporary period, and how this relatesto the changes in land ownership that took place. As a basis for this study a Maenggoldo related document owned by theHaenam Yun family is used. Along with this, the study retrieved two newspaperarticles related to Maenggoldo issued under the Japanese colonial rule, enablingfurther investigation of the taxation resistance process. Accordingly, this studyinforms beforehand about various limitations with respect to approaching theactual situation, since it could only rely on a document of the Haenam Yunfamily itself. The study is roughly divided into three chronological parts. The first partdiscusses the taxation resistance in 1842; the second part, examines the resistancein 1905 before the annexation of Korea by Japan; and the third part is focusedon, 1935 in the late Japanese colonial era. For each period, the taxation resistanceis investigated in relation to the process of land ownership changes.
