Abstract
This study examines the crew training system and cross-cultural adaptation of Korean distant-water fisheries in the 1960s, through an analysis of Crew Guide for Distant-Water Fisheries (1969), published by Korea Deep Sea Fisheries Co. The guidebook, printed in October 1969 by the company’s Seoul headquarters, contains practical instructions for Korean crew members operating in distant seas. It includes essential safety precautions, introductions to foreign ports and supply bases, guidelines for entry and departure procedures, tuna longline fishing methods, ship management and leakage response, navigation and weather, the Seafarers Act, multilingual (Korean-English-French-Spanish) fishery terms, currency conversion tables, and global time charts. The cover displays flags of 30 nations related to Korea’s fishing zones at the time. As one of the few training materials from Korean fisheries companies, this guide reflects the actual demands placed on crew members during the early phase of Korea’s distant-water fisheries industry. It also fills the educational gap left by state institutions. The guide provides a vivid picture of crew members’ attitudes and preparedness as they faced unfamiliar maritime cultures—particularly in the South Pacific region of Samoa, where Korea’s distant-water tuna fishing began in 1957. It illustrates not only the technical knowledge required for tuna longline operations but also how seafarers coped with cross-cultural challenges. Through this analysis, the study sheds light on the distant-water fishing frontier as a site of both technological development and emotional, cultural adaptation in unfamiliar environments.
