Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the quality of audit firm industry expertise. Like auditor's size and brand name, the industry expertise has been though to be proxy for auditor's quality. Therefore, we predict that the absolute discretionary accruals of clients of audit firm industry expertise are lower that those of the other audit firms. To measure the industry expertise, we use various indicators such the sum of clients book value, number of clients and etc. The sample is the Korean listed and non listed firms from 1996 to 2002. these features help our study to gain more reliable results. The empirical analysis shows that the absolute discretionary accruals of audit firm industry expertise are lower than those of other audit firms but this result is not statistically significant. Therefore we divide the samples into "large" and "small" group by clients' asset size. The industry expertise affects significantly the absolute discretionary accruals in "large" group, but not in "small" group. As result, we estimate that the quality of audit firm industry expertise in differentiated to the clients' size. In other words, the audit firm industry expertise provides high quality of audit only to large-size clients.
