Abstract
This study aimed at identify the difference in peer competence and emotional intelligence depending on language attitudes of young children. The subjects of present study were 199 young children (96 boys and 103 girls) attending 3 kindergartens in G city. Based on language attitudes test, children who had top 50% score were assigned to upper group and those who had bottom 50% score to lower group(99 upper group and 100 lower group). The data were analyzed by t-test using the SPSS WIN 22.0 program. The results were as follows: First, there were statistically significant differences depending on language attitudes, in the overall peer competence and sub-areas such as ‘sociability’, ‘pro-social’, and ‘scrupulosity’. In other words, children with high language attitudes showed higher peer competence. Second, there were statistically significant difference depending on language attitudes, in the overall emotional intelligence and such a sub-area as ‘self-awareness ability’, ‘self-control ability’, ‘ability to recognize others’ and ‘ability to control others’. In other words, children with high language attitudes showed higher emotional intelligence. The results of this study suggest that language attitude is an important variable in improving the peer competence and emotional intelligence of young children.
