Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean mothers’ emotion-related beliefs. A total of 12 mothers who have 3~6 years old child participated in one-to-one interviews. Using CQR(Consensual Qualitative Research) methods, we identified 28 items of mothers’ emotional beliefs in 4 areas, including “General beliefs of emotion”, “Emotion development”, “Belief and understanding about children’s emotion”, and “Emotion-related parenting behaviors”. These results reveal Korean mothers’ emotional belief that a mother has to accept and guide a child’s emotions even though they have difficulties in dealing with a child who immature in emotion-regulation. This study has implication on in-depth understanding about Korean mothers’ emotion-related beliefs using qualitative research method.
