Abstract
This study aims to explore the meanings of Korean grandparents’ experiences in reading picture books to their grandchildren in multicultural families and to draw implications for the development of educational programs tailored to their needs. With the increasing involvement of grandparents in childcare, particularly in multicultural households, their role as intergenerational educators has gained new importance. Six Korean grandparents from multicultural families participated in a picture book reading program and were subsequently interviewed in depth. The collected data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis method, resulting in two overarching themes: emotional experiences and environmental experiences. Emotional experiences included four subthemes: “limitations in emotional communication,” reflecting the struggle to engage effectively with grandchildren due to language and generational gaps; “a sense of educational helplessness,” highlighting their lack of confidence in educational roles; “expectations for grandchildren,” showing their hopes for the children's future success; and “anxiety about passing down cultural identity,” expressing concern over whether their cultural values would be retained. Environmental experiences were divided into individual and social levels. Individual-level challenges included “physical limitations due to aging” and “psychological burden from multiple caregiving roles.” Social-level challenges comprised “the burden of cultural explanation and the need for supplementary materials” and “limited institutional support for multicultural grandparents, along with difficulties in digital access.” The findings revealed that the grandparents assumed new roles as cultural mediators and identity negotiators but faced multiple barriers, including language, physical, psychological, and structural obstacles. This study underscores the need to recognize Korean grandparents in multicultural families as active participants in early education and calls for comprehensive support systems that address their multifaceted challenges and strengthen their capacity to contribute meaningfully to their grandchildren’s development.
