Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mothers’ and fathers’ coparenting and family interactions on young children’s school readiness. Data were drawn from the 7th wave (2014) of the Korean Children’s Panel (Korea Institute of Child Care and Education), and a total of 1,066 parents of 71-month-old children participated in the analysis. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted. The results showed, first, that both maternal and paternal coparenting and family interactions were significantly associated with children’s overall school readiness and its subdomains. Second, mothers’ and fathers’ perceptions of coparenting and family interaction differentially influenced children’s school readiness. Maternal coparenting significantly affected overall school readiness, socio-emotional development, and learning attitudes, while maternal family cohesion significantly influenced communication and cognitive development and knowledge. In contrast, paternal family cohesion had a significant impact on overall school readiness, socio-emotional development, learning attitudes, and communication. The effects of paternal family interaction were more pronounced than those of paternal coparenting. Third, the analysis of relative influence revealed that maternal coparenting was the most influential factor for overall school readiness, socio-emotional development, and learning attitudes, whereas maternal family cohesion and paternal coparenting conflict were the primary predictors of cognitive development and knowledge. These findings highlight the importance of developing customized parent education and family support programs that consider the distinct roles and characteristics of mothers and fathers in promoting children's school readiness.
