Abstract
This study aimed to examine the moderated mediating effects of fathers’ parenting involvement and mothers’ value of child in the relationship between depression and parenting behaviors in mothers of infants. The participants were 2,433 mothers from the first wave of the Korean Early Childhood Education & Care Panel Study. Correlation analyses of research variables were conducted using SPSS 29.0 and Models 1, 4, and 7 of PROCESS Macro 4.2 were applied to examine the moderating, mediating, and moderated mediating effects. The main findings were as follows. First, mothers’ value of child partially mediated the relationship between mothers’ depression and parenting behaviors. Second, fathers’ involvement in parenting moderated the relationship between mothers’ depression and mothers’ value of child. Finally, the mediating effect of mothers’ value of child in the relationship between mothers’ depression and parenting behaviors was moderated by fathers’ involvement in parenting. This study demonstrated that mothers’ perception of child values and parenting behaviors should be understood as a complex process involving intrapersonal factors such as maternal psychological characteristics, and extrapersonal factors, such as fathers’ involvement in parenting. This study can be used as basic data for supporting mothers’ parenting of infants.
