Abstract
There are not many successful models in domestic historical dramas. In this situation, ‘Arang and the Governor’ is a case that showed significant uniqueness as a faction historical drama. This study is to analyze strategies to create game type storytelling with an emphasis on ‘Arang and the Governor’, a faction historical drama made with a motif of ‘Arang legend’. The essence of this discussion is, for importance of characters, to identify how game storytelling contributes to the character of ‘Arang’ who has an ego as ‘sacred power (Numinose)’ and an ego of ‘playing human (Homo Ludens)’. In order to achieve this goal, game type storytelling factors were categorized into internal factors and external factors and divided into mission, competition, and interaction, and analyzed in detail. The TV drama, ‘Arang and Governor’ follows a course of separation, descent, hardship, and return as in heroic epics. That is, this story consists of an external story in which Arang separated from her parents by being killed before her wedding goes through hardships and tests and revives and then finds clues for her own death and the governor's missing mother and of an internal story in which Gods made a plan to get rid of a monster which takes clear spirits of virgins for four hundred years. This mysterious setting is combined with fantasy factors of ‘Arang and the Governor’. This shows progressive repetition of a mission and it is utilized as a story strategy. The drama and story were twisted in a pleasant way as an interesting alternative to the real world. Since the story covers part of heaven, a new story may start anytime and this secures game type storytelling autonomy which naturally allows coincidence and reversal. As a result, it is necessary to make precise strategies in a view of storytelling for TV dramas to captivate diverse viewers who have needs for vicarious satisfaction. These strategies include designing three-dimensional and innovative characters that make the drama move by itself on the basis of essential stories close to its subject, competing with a mission to make viewers immersed in the drama, inserting interactive factors, and systematizing a website to share the drama randomly and privately. ‘Arang and the Governor’ utilized a role-play game form in storytelling and promoted viewers' immersion and longing for self-identification. Since plans for storytelling contents change depending on characteristics and types of dramas, relevant studies should be more refined in the future.
