학부 유학생을 위한 글쓰기 교육의 목표와 내용에 관한 고찰

최근 한국을 찾는 외국인 유학생 수의 꾸준한 증가와 함께 한국의 대학(원)에 진학하는 학문 목적 한국어 학습자의 수도 크게 늘어나면서 유학생 수의 양적 증가에 따른 질적 관리의 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 이에 본고에서는 대학 교양과정의 필수이자 핵심 교과목이라고 할 수 있는 글쓰기 강좌에서 학부 유학생의 글쓰기 능력을 제고할 수 있는 방안을 모색하기 위하여 유학생 대상 글쓰기 교재의 구체적인 내용을 검토하였다. 본고에서는 유학생을 위한 대학 교양 글쓰기 교육의 목표를 학술적 글쓰기 교육으로 설정하고, 학술적 쓰기 차원에서 외국인 유학생에게 교수되어야 하는 내용을 크게 1) 내용 지식 활성화 단계, 2) 내용 지식 수집 단계, 3) 내용 지식 조직 단계 등 세 단계로 나누어 논의를 진행 하였다. 이를 바탕으로 현재 대학 교양과정에서 쓰이고 있는 외국인 유학생 대상 쓰기 교재의 내용을 분석한 결과, 주제와 관련된 학습자 내부의 지식을 활성화하는 단계인 내용 지식 활성화 단계와 글을 실제로 쓰는 과정이 포함된 내용 지식 조직 단계의 활동들이 교재에서 비교적 구체 적으로 제시된 데 비해, 관련 자료를 수집하고 선별하는 과정인 내용 지식 수집 단계의 활동들은 교재에서 구체적으로 제시되고 있지 않은 점을 파악할 수 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 학부 유학생의 글쓰기 교육이 학술적 쓰기를 중심 으로 이루어져야 하는 점과 학술적 쓰기의 핵심은 쓰기 내용 지식 생 성에 있다는 점을 인식하고, 실제 교재의 분석을 바탕으로 전체적인 교재의 구성 및 세부 활동 내용에서 유의미한 개선점을 찾고자 하였다 는 데에 의의가 있다. 본고의 논의를 토대로 학문 목적 유학생을 위한 쓰기 교육에 관한 다양한 연구가 이어지기를 기대한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the purpose and the contents of Korean writing education for the international undergraduate students at Korean universities. The importance of Korean writing education for the international under- graduate students is increasing with a significant rise in the number of the international undergraduate students at Korean universities. This study tries to define the purpose of Korean writing education as the ‘academic writing’ and classify the contents of Korean writing education into three categories –1) activating content knowledge, 2) gathering content knowledge, and 3) organizing content knowledge. This study analyzes the textbooks of Korean writing for the international undergraduate students at Korean universities and suggests some improvements based on the results of the analysis of the textbooks. The result of this study shows that there are less contents about organizing content knowledge compare to activating content knowledge and gathering content knowledge in textbooks of Korean writing for the international undergraduate students at Korean universities. The result of this study is expected to provide information on anticipated future studies in Korean language education for an academic purpose for the international undergraduate students. Another expectation is that this study would be followed by many more notable studies on Korean writing education for the international undergraduate students at Korean universities.
