Abstract
In university writing education, generative AI has been perceived both as a challenge and as an opportunity, highlighting the need for ethical guidance. In the spring semester of 2025, S University implemented an ethics-based approach to the use of generative AI in the course <Thinking and Expression>. The program comprised three components: the provision of “Guidelines for the Use of Generative AI,” education in effective prompting in collaboration with the university library, and the submission of plagiarism detection reports generated by CopyKiller. A student survey revealed several positive effects. The guidelines and the “Pledge of Ethical Writing” enhanced students’ awareness of ethical responsibility. Prompt training improved their understanding of effective questioning and practical use, while plagiarism reports discouraged misconduct and supported fairness in evaluation. Although students were generally satisfied with the course, they also requested further instruction on practical applications of generative AI. These findings suggest that writing education should move beyond ethical guidelines and plagiarism prevention toward concrete, learnercentered practices for the responsible and productive use of generative AI.
