Abstract

This study aims to compare and analyze the use of connective endings with a sentence-final function between L1 speakers of Korean and L2 speakers of Korean in spoken discourse and to derive educational implications from the findings. For this purpose, conversations from a total of 10 groups, consisting of 14 L1 speakers of Korean and 19 L2 speakers of Korean with an advanced level of Korean proficiency, were used as research data. The study primarily focused on the discourse-level functions of connective endings with a sentence-final function in analyzing their usage patterns. The results revealed that L1 speakers of Korean used connective endings with a sentence-final function approximately twice as frequently as L2 speakers. Among the various endings, L1 speakers predominantly used -ko (-고), -nuntey (-는데), -eseo (-어서), and -nikka (-니까), with -ko and -nuntey accounting for over 70% of their usage. In contrast, L2 speakers showed a markedly high usage of -ko, while their use of -nuntey was relatively low. Regarding discourse functions, L2 speakers predominantly used connective endings with a sentence-final function for the purpose of providing additional information, while their use of other discourse functions was limited. Moreover, a considerable number of errors were observed in their use of these endings. The findings of this study highlight the necessity of teaching connective endings with a sentence-final function in Korean language education. By analyzing authentic spoken discourse, this study systematically examines the differences in the use of these endings between L1 and L2 speakers of Korean, thereby providing fundamental data for educational purposes.
