Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of auditory-visual intergration stimulus in children wearing cochlear implants. In total of 30 children(age range: 8~13) participated in the study. Among them, 15 children wearing cochlear implants(CI) had at least 4-year cochlear implants experience and used no sign language. Digit span with forward/backward on auditory only(AO), visual only(VO) and auditory visual(AV) conditions tests were assessed for working memory capacity. The results showed that 1) children with normal hearing group(NH) was higher forward digit span scores in AO and VO than those of CI group in both conditions. However, forward digit span scores in AV and backward digit span scores in 3 conditions were not significantly different between two groups. 2) NH group was not significantly different among conditions, but CI group was significantly different on each condition except forward VO-AV condition. Also visual enhancement(VE) was greater than auditory enhancement(AE) in CI group. 3) CI duration and digit span scores were strongly correlated. These results indicated that auditory-visual cues are effective for CI groups working memory improvement. The authors suggest that auditory-visual materials are needed for CI children in the classroom for improving their learning abilities.
