Abstract

This study reinterprets Baekjung and Baekjungnori not merely as efforts to preserve traditional culture, but as forms of “living cultural heritage” that continually renew themselves over time. Both the Buddhist worldview embodied in Baekjung and the folk–regional worldview represented by the Miryang Baekjungnori share essential elements such as salvation and offering, remembrance of the deceased and prayers for abundance, and the realization of communal solidarity. At the intersection of ritual and play, these traditions reveal a complementary reciprocity—“mutual support for one another”—that reflects a distinctive cultural dimension in which the living and the dead are cyclically connected. In a modern context marked by growing conflict and individualism, Baekjung and Baekjungnori function as meaningful practices for restoring community bonds. The Baekjung village festival in Toero, Miryang, exemplifies this by providing a venue for intergenerational solidarity among elders, youth, and children. Furthermore, the festivalization of Baekjungnori demonstrates its potential for local economic revitalization and cultural tourism, offering a contemporary application of traditional culture. Ultimately, Baekjung and Baekjungnori serve as cultural bridges linking life and death, connecting generations, and reaffirming the enduring value of “LIVING TOGETHER” in today’s society.
