Abstract

The objective of this study was to ascertain shifts in the distribution of lacquer trees in Korea with a literature review and the application of species distribution models. A comprehensive literature review of records from the Joseon Dynasty and the Japanese occupation period was conducted to assess the factors that influenced lacquer tree production sites and the supply and demand of lacquer in the past. A species distribution model (MaxEnt) was employed to analyze future distribution changes under climate change scenarios (SSP 1-2.6, SSP 2-4.5, SSP 3-7.0, SSP 5-8.5). According to historical records that provide precise geographical references, lacquer trees were documented in 207 locations during the early Joseon period, 16 locations in the late Joseon period, and 39 locations during the Japanese occupation period. During the early Joseon Dynasty, lacquer production was state-regulated and supplied nationwide. However, by the late Joseon Dynasty, the habitat is believed to have shrunk due to socioeconomic factors such as war and the negative effects of Bangnap (防納). During the Japanese occupation period, the distribution area expanded due to Japan’s initiative to increase lacquer production. However, following liberation, the supply and demand system collapsed due to shifts in public perception and economic factors. The species distribution model analysis identified mean annual temperature (BIO1) and annual precipitation (BIO12) as the most influential factors affecting the distribution of lacquer trees. The analysis predicted that by the second half of the 21st century, most regions will become unsuitable habitats in high-carbon scenarios (SSP 3-7.0, SSP 5-8.5). Conversely, in the low-carbon scenario (SSP 1-2.6), habitat potential is maintained in some mountainous areas of Gangwon-do. However, non-climatic factors, such as declining domestic lacquer production and high import dependence—factors not accounted for in species distribution models—may also have significant implications for future distribution changes. It is our hope that this study will continue to draw attention to the conservation of traditional materials, including lacquer.
