Abstract
This study analyzed the material characteristics of the mortar used in the stone masonry and Yeojang (女墻) construction of Ganghwasanseong Fortress during the Joseon Dynasty. The mortar samples structure was observed, and qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using X-ray analysis, thermal analysis, and infrared spectroscopy to determine its constituent components. Its physical properties were analyzed by pore characteristics, compressive strength, and the particle size distribution of the aggregates. Additionally, organic characteristic analysis was performed to confirm the presence of organic additives in the mortar. Analysis revealed calcite, silicate minerals such as quartz, feld spar, mica, and iron minerals as the main constituent minerals of the mortar. Some samples contain fragments of calcite resulting from incomplete calcination during the lime manufacturing process, and limestone, presumed to be the raw material for the lime used in the mortar, was also identified. Quantitative analysis of calcite content was performed to estimate the composition ratio of lime and aggregate. The results indicate that lime was mixed at a low ratio of approximately 10 wt.%, while the aggregate and soil exhibited higher specific gravities. The mortar aggregate displayed angular shapes and a wide range of particle sizes, from gravel to silt, which are considered to have contributed to the formation of fine pores and the high compressive strength of the sample. The presence of organic additives could not be clearly confirmed. Analysis of the finishing layer on the sample surface indicates that the construction method involved filling the interior with mortar while finishing the externally exposed surfaces with a lime psaste.
