Thispaperarguesfortheneedoftrainingdoctorsinordertoimprovetheirskillsoflisteningtopatientsandofconductingtheinteractionwiththem.Itarguesforapplieddiscourseanalysisasanapproachtomedicaldiscoursewhichprovidesforthesoundestempiricalbasisfordevelopingtrainingschedules.Thearticleshortlyreviewsthebasicproceduresandstocksofknowledgewhicharepropertoapplieddiscourseanalysis.Itthenturnstotheimprovementofdoctors'skillsofactivelisteningtothepatientofandanalyzinghis/hercommunicativedisplays,e.g.regardingemotions,subjectivetheoriesofillnessandidentityconcernsofhis/hersufferings.Finally,aspectsoftheimprovementfordoctors'communicativeskillsarediscussed,e.g.enhancingthecomprehensibilityofdoctors'turnsattalk,themanagementofthepatients'participationinmedicaldialogueandtheformulationofquestions.
