Abstract

This approach aims to spatialize the youth’s practice of digital media contents. In conceptualizing digital habitus as both the condition and product of the combination of real economic, social, cultural capitals and individual media practice of representation, I analyse the effect of young people’s practice of digital media contents on the [trans]formation of urban space. Four urban zones in Seoul are explored: alternative cultural zone, professional mania zone, popular cultural zone, and experimental art zone. Through conducting participatory observations and interviews, I found a particular zone has generated a specific cultural code. The mode of self-structuring time and space in contents practices considers highly important. The social relationship supporting this spatio-cultural network is friendship. The emerging cultural code in digital practice tend to emphasize specificity rather than generality, and self-centred organization rather than unification. It is also suggested that the new emerging urban cultural network is to potentially challenge the established rule of the field of the city, based on the rule of unbalanced allocation of economic, social, and cultural capitals, by its spirit of pursuing cultural diversity and transformation.
