Abstract

This study is to comparatively examine the aspects of 『Mudang Naeryeok』, which is kept at Gyujanggak, Seoul National University, and currently performed Seoul-gut. 『Mudang Naeryeok』 is a valuable picture that describes the aspects of Seoul-gut. Two types of variants are kept at Gyujanggak, and there are many other variants at different places. In comparison of the picture of gut-geori in <Mudang Naeryeok> and the aspects of currently performed Seoul-gut, the differences are as follows: First, <Jaeseok-geori> exists while <Bulsa-geori> does not. Second, <Byeolseong- geori> and <Dae-geori> are in different locations. Third, <Hogu-geori> and <Mansinmalmyeong> are separate. Fourth, <Sinjang-geori> and <Daegam-geori> are not seen. Fifth, the characteristics of <Changbu-geori> have been changed. Sixth, <Seongju-geori> and <Gureung-geori> were originally separate, but <Gureunggeori> has disappeared and become part of <Seongju-geori>. The aspects above indicate that 『Mudang Naeryeok』 is a picture drawn, not in the late 19th century, but in the 20th century. Some terms used in 『Mudang Naeryeok』 show possibilities that it might have been produced in the 20th century, but the shaman activity in the picture is not that of the 20th century. It is necessary to distinguish the matter of terms from the matter of contents in the approach. Hence, it is difficult to conclude that 『Mudang Naeryeok』 was not a picture drawn in the 19th century only based on some terms. Even if it was produced in the 20th century, the contents of the book are about the aspects of Seoul shaman activity in the 19th century.
