오늘날 성차별 언어는 성별 갈등의 심화로 인해 경미한 성차별 경험으로 간과하기 어려운 심각한영향을 끼치고 있다. 본 연구는 성차별언어에 대해 실증적 연구가 많지 않고 나아가 다양하고 다차원적인 성별고정관념의 개념으로 접근하지 못했다는 점에 주목하고, 성차별 언어 경험의 효과를 감정, 인지, 행동의 단계적인 차원에서 성별로 살펴보았다. 전국 17세 이상 59세 미만의 남녀를 대상으로 실시한 설문자료(N=1,805)를 활용하여 분석한 결과, 자신의 성별에 대한 성차별 언어에 접촉했을 때, 여성이 남성보다 부정적인 감정적 반응의 정도가 훨씬 큰 것으로 나타났으며, 여성은 남성보다 성차별 언어 표현 접촉으로 인해 이성 신뢰가 더 크게 하락되고, 남성은 반대로 여성보다 성차별 언어표현을 오히려 사용하게 되는 것으로 나타났다. 다만 두 성별 모두 성차별 언어 접촉 경험이자존감에는 큰 영향을 보이지 않는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
The gender conflictual aspect of the current Korean society has led the people not to be able to overlook sexist language as a minor sexist behavior. Noting that there have not been many empirical studies about sexist language and its effect and even a small number of studies on this subject have approached it without duly understanding the multiplicity and multi-dimensionality of gender stereotypes, this research attempted to analyze the impact of sexist language at the discrete levels of emotion, cognition and behavior. Our analysis using a nationwide survey of men and women showed that women had a much greater degree of a negative emotional response than men when they came into contact with sexist language. Moreover, women appeared to lose trust in men as a result of exposure to sexist language, while men tend to use sexist language more for the same reason. However, the experience of being exposed to sexist language did not seem to have much impact on the self-esteem of both sexes.
