Abstract
‘Mosimneun sori’ (songs to encourage farmers planting rice seedlings) is found scarcer than weeding songs. Previous studies show the same results that the kinds of ‘mosimneun sori’ are 11 or 19 at best nationwide. Compared to 202 weeding songs, the number of planting songs is quite small. Then, why is the number of ‘mosimneun sori’ so small? To find out the reason of its scarcity, this study examines the ‘mosimneun sori’ of Jeonbuk area. There are four planting songs collected in Jeonbuk area. However, the result of analysis shows they didn’t originate from this region. One is found to be the weeding song of a field or a rice paddy; some regions received the song of an adjacent province as it was; some used mixed songs while exchanging influences with neighboring regions; and the last one was ‘nongbuga’, ‘a farmers’ song’ that became popular after being received into a pansori. What would the aspects of those ‘mosimneun sori’ like to tell? Folk music defines its attributes as ‘continuity that connects the present with the past’, ‘variation that comes out from individual or group creative impulses’ and ‘selectivity of a community that decides various forms’. Thus, for the attributes of folk music to be met, it is necessary to have an absolute time as ‘accumulation of time’. Judging from this definition, the reason that the ‘mosimneun sori’ of Jeonbuk area is not diversified and settled down firmly in certain areas is that there was no enough energy accumulated in this area for it to be created, rooted, and expanded into other areas. In other words, ‘mosimneun sori’ was not advanced here in this area because of the lack of time and suitable conditions. Rice transplanting method that produced ‘mosimneun sori’ was begun from the late Joseon. However, unexpectedly, a new Japanese style of farming was forced from the beginning of the 20th century when the Japanese government began to rule the Korean Peninsula. When the Japanese method was introduced while ‘mosimneun sori’ hadn’t been settled down, there was severe incongruity between the song and labor. In addition, another factor as much important as transplantation was the inflection point where the rice seedling planting method changed from random to guide line planting. While traditional rice seedling planting was done in a small scale, thus random style work. However, the improved style was applied to large scale farming, requiring fast and accurate movement of farmers. The conclusion of this paper is that the new style of rice seedling planting caused incongruity between the labor songs and planting methods, so ‘mosimneun sori’ failed to advance or ceased to exist in Jeonbuk area in the earlier period.
