Abstract

Sitgim Gut is, by its name, related to shaman apparatus. Its procedures such as <Nukoligi>, <Gopuli>, <Gildakeum>, and etc. originated from the names of shaman equipment. In the center of gut performance, there is the shaman equipment. Focusing on this, this article attempts to disclose the distinctive features of Jindo Sitgim Gut. Jindo Sitgim Gut has rather simple decoration equipment for gut center. For ritual shaman equipment, exclusive equipment is rather rare. The equipment is made from Korean paper or bamboo tree at the scene or ordinary items are used for rituals. The reproduction of symbol through the ritual diversion of ordinary items is the distinctive feature of Sitgim Gut shaman equipment. Shaman expresses the core symbols such as ‘Julyeon’, ‘Puli’, ‘Sitgim’, ‘Dakeum’, and etc through the performance equipment. Nukoligi is a visualized mark of Julyeon; Goe and Gopuli illustrate the severance between this life and the deceased; and Sitgim is a purification ritual of personality through the religious purifying power. In addition, Jilbe and Gildakeum symbolize the road to Hades and transfer to the underworld. The features of Sitgim Gut is in performing feature through utilizing shaman equipment. This article attempted to look for the characteristics of Jindo Sitgim Gut shaman equipment from multi-level through the comparison with the East Coast areas. Jindo’s decoration equipment for gut center is quite simple while that of Odu Gut in the East Coast is very splendid. There are a lot of similarities and differences between the two areas in terms of ritual equipment. Odu Gut of the East Coast shows less usage of shaman apparatus. On the other hand, Jindo Sitgim Gut shows symbolic performance through the high usage of shaman equipment. They are closely intertwined and contextualized. The shaman equipment of Jindo Sitgim Gut strengthens performance in artistic aspect by combining highly artistic shaman songs with the playing of musical instruments.
