Abstract
This paper attempts to explore the characteristics and assumptions of a range of approaches to teaching local history in England. There has been a recent development of interest in local history in the field of history education. This can be partly attributed to the fact that teaching local history is considered useful in making history more relevant to students. A range of approaches to teaching local history identified in this paper vary in terms of learning activities and learning outcomes. However, given the fact that history lessons listed in this paper tended to pay close attention to key historical concepts such as change, cause and consequences, testimony, and historical representations, it is crucial to provide students with an opportunity to explore the issue of historicity of historical representations and their own interpretation of its dynamics.
