근대적 의미의 성은 선정적인 관심의 대상일 뿐 아니라 인구와 인체를 조절하고 규율하는 권력의 대상이며, 또한 개인의 주관적인 정체성의 형성과 밀접하게 관련된 요소이기도 하다. 권력과 의학적 관점에서 생식을 목적으로 한 경우 외에 성과 관련된 모든 것이 비정상적이고 정신병적인 것으로 진단된 데에는 19세기 말 널리 유포되었던 퇴화론의 영향이 크다. 당시 퇴화는 히스테리와 쉽게 결합하는 것으로 알려졌는데, 이는 두 병리적 현상이 모두 근대 문명이 인간의 신경을 과도하게 자극하기 때문에 발생한 것으로 이해되었기 때문이다. 이러한 신경학적 관점은 18~19세기에 인간 본성을 설명하는 새로운 이론으로 형성되었으며, 민감한 신경은 풍부한 감정의 원천으로 긍정되기도 했지만 동시에 신경과민에 따른 감정 과잉은 상상한 것을 그대로 믿는 암시, 나아가 히스테리를 낳는 원인으로 부정적으로 인식되기에 이른다. 성에 있어서도 감정과 상상은 중요한 요소로 기능한다. 성은 단지 본능의 문제가 아니라 성적 상상의 문제이며, 따라서 성행위를 통한 본능의 만족이 아니라 성적 상상 안에서 형성된 감정의 만족과 밀접하게 관련된다. 한국문학사에서 성에 대해서 김동인만큼 일찍이 그리고 깊이 다룬 작가는 드물다. 상상 속에서 감정을 즐기고 탐닉하는 장면이 김동인 소설만의 고유한 특징은 아니지만, 성과 관련된 심리를 깊이 파고들어 근대의 전형적인 성적 상상을 거의 완성된 상태로 제시한 것은 김동인의 독보적인 성과라고 평가할 수 있다. 또한 이러한 성적 상상은, 소비에 동반되는 상상과 유사한 구조를 통해 근대적 욕망 전반에 적용될 수 있다. 이런 점에서 김동인 문학은 단순히 성의 문제를 다룬 것이 아니라 성을 통해 당시 형성되기 시작한 근대적 욕망의 구조를 선구적으로 형상화한 것으로 이해할 수 있다.
Abstract
Modern sexuality is the object of the power for anatomo-politics of the body and bio-politics of populations, as well as of erotic interest. And it is closely related to the formation of the individual’s subjective identity. Most sexuality that has nothing to do with sexual reproduction is diagnosed as abnormal and psychotic by degeneration theory, which was widespread at the end of the 19th century. Degeneration theory tended to be easily combined with hysteria. These two diseases were understood to be caused by modern civilization which excessively stimulated the nerves. New theories of human nature centered on the nervous system and its importance to all emotion. A more refined nervous system and a greater sensibility were believed to be proof of a greater degree of civilization, but at the same time they were more liable to nervous collapse. Hysteria was the most representative and well-known nervous illness at that time. Emotion and imagination play an important role in the diagnosis of hysteria as well as sexuality, which is not only a matter of instinct. Sexual pleasure results from not only a satisfaction of instinct through sexual activity, but emotional satisfaction of the sexual imagination. Kim Dong-in published literary works about sexuality earlier and more elaborately than any other in Korean literary history. He presents readers with almost complete model for the modern sexual imagination. This model can be generally applied to all modern desire including sexual desire, which works through imagination.
