Abstract

This study aims to catalogue the American serial films that were exhibited at theaters in Chosun during the period of 1916 to 1925, when these films occupied the status of ‘feature’ programs. By examining the characteristics of the early spectatorship of these American films and their influence on the emergence of filmic production in Chosun starting in 1919, this study seeks to revise the existing historiography of Chosun cinema which focuses exclusively on filmic texts produced by Chosun filmmakers. American films became the majority of works screened at Chosun theaters from 1916, especially with the release of the serial film Broken Coin (1915), and retained their ‘feature’ status until 1925. For those first ten years, over 78% of serial films produced in the U.S. were shown in Chosun, which was 2.6 to 5 times the number shown in major European countries. The popularity of American serial films in Chosun was a result of specific localization practices designed to adapt them to Chosun tastes, such as transforming their length and rhythm in accordance with contemporary (mainly European) feature films, and thus utilizing the transformative quality of the serial film itself. Also, a preference for male action stars like Eddie Polo to serial queens like Pearl White and Ruth Roland, who dominated the early stage of American cinema, characterized Chosun spectatorship, which took the American body as a projection of the desire of the colonized for “movement” (hwaldong). As the first filmic production in Chosun, Yeonsoeguk (連鎖劇) illustrates how the appeal of American serial films, as expressed in formal characteristics such as exterior appearance, action scenes, and the star system, were recognized and appreciated as ways of capturing the contemporaneity of ethnic places and actors experiencing a rapid process of colonialization and modernization. Spectatorship of American serial films began to wane as the taste for ‘quality film’ emerged in the mid-1920s and the film industry reorganized itself in response to this change, but the earlier taste for popular genres initiated by the serial films continued to participate in the formation of Americanism and functioned as a mode of reflexive modernism in colonized Chosun.
