Abstract
Utilizing a plant-product dataset for Korean manufacturing for the period from 1991 to1998, this paper aims to clarify the early export dynamics with a focus on export discovery, export following, and export spillovers. Main empirical results are as follows. First, we find that large and highly productive exporters engaged in R&D play a leading role in export discovery. Second, we find evidence that export discovery by export pioneers has positive spillover effect on potential follower exporters. Third, export discoveries by small plants has a larger spillover effect than those by large plants. Fourth, large plants are more likely to become follower exporters when export discoveries are made. Overall, the evidence of this paper suggests that policies supporting export discovery, particularly those by small plants, may be necessary.
