Abstract
South Korea is expected to face a significant reduction in its labor force, resulting from an exceptionally low fertility rate and a rapidly aging population. As a result, the effective utilization of middle-aged and older workers is becoming increasingly important. This study investigates their role in the labor market based on a life-cycle task analysis, aiming to assess current conditions and explore policy directions for improvement. The analysis reveals significant heterogeneity in task composition across age group: as workers age, the intensity of analytical and social task decreases, while the intensity of manual task increases. This task heterogeneity primarily arises during reemployment following involuntary job separations. Younger workers tend to find new jobs with task composition similar to their previous positions, whereas those who experience involuntary separation later in their careers are more likely to transition into jobs with markedly different task requirements. Such task discontinuities may reflect not only changes in relative productivity among older workers but also structural barriers in the labor market that restrict demand for them, highlighting the need for policy efforts to promote task continuity.
