Exploring the Policy Implications for Korea Medical Tourism and International Patients: Comparative Analysis on the Top 10 Countries Profiles

The purpose of the study is to describe characteristics of international patients in Korea from 2009 to 2016. The characteristics of international patients including nationality, annual number of patients, and average medical cost data are from the Korean Health Industry Development Institute. We selected the top 10 countries according to the number of international patients in each year. We divided them into two groups: one that remained during the study period and the other that newly entered into the top 10. The qualitative comparisons were made between the two groups. Mongolia and Thailand showed the highest proportion of patients among various visa types. The average medical costs per person was the highest in UAE and Thailand. The observed patterns between groups could provide country-specific implications to facilitate medical tourism in Korea.
