음식이 조선왕들의 질병과 사망에 미친 영향에 관한 연구(조선중기: 조선 제10대 연산군~조선 제18대 현종)

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the effects of foods and diseases on death of kings in the mid-Joseon Dynasty (from Yeonsangun, the 10th King to Hyeonjong, the 18th king in the Joseon Dynasty). Yeonsangun, the 10th King of the Joseon Dynasty, pursued physical desire and cannibalism due to the deposed Queen Yun that was his mother. Giving himself over to carnal pleasures, he indulged in foods that were good for stamina and changing to a tyrant, he was deported by Jungjong Restoration. After that, he died of plague. Jungjong, the 11st King of the Joseon Dynasty, made his retainers and wife die because of his indecision and a shortage of determination and as a puppet for retainers that made him become a king, he could not control his anger and enjoyed cold foods in his whole life. Suffering from constipation that caused difficulty in having a movement, he eventually died of severe fever resulting from colitis. Injong, the 12nd King, kept away from alcohol and women and lived a frugal and disciplined life, but eating light damaged his body and he died suddenly of complications, including dysentery. Myeongjong, the 13rd King, expressed sorrow and joy irregularly and was weak-minded, so he wore too hot clothes and enjoyed cold foods. The cause for his death was a lack of energy and a heart disease. Seonjo, the 14th King, was careful about behaving and enjoyed studying, but he was jealous too much and had low digestive power. For this reason, he suffered from indigestion and died suddenly of stroke. Gwanghaegun, the 15th King, had strong strength, but he got angry often and died of old age. Injo, the 16th King, was blinded by authority, so he doubted others and behaved abnormally. Because he had a bad digestion, he mostly ate porridge and died of malaria due to weak strength. Hyojong, the 17th King, was very devoted to his parents and upright, but he had difficulty in controling his anger and liked eating too much and hanging out with women. In the middle of receiving swelling treatment for diabetes, he kept bleeding and died from excessive bleeding, in the end. Hyeonjong, the 18th King, was gentle and smart, but due to his excessive devotion to his parents, he failed to control what he ate and died of high fever and diarrhea.
