초록

To be successful in modern society, it is essential to be a good communicator. Effective communicators are able to skillfully craft and weave their messages with verbal and nonverbal message delivery techniques. In this empirical research, I investigate how verbal message manifests itself in 5 convincing speeches presented by three well known figures. Specifically, the 3 speeches given by Barack Obama, Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech, and John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address. The research method involves comparing and analyzing the contents of the speeches by the speakers. The results are as follows: First, all three speakers presented verbal messages with the common theme of instilling hope and courage to the audience. The sentence structure and wording utilized repetition and parallelism to ensure effective and persuasive message delivery. The biggest difference in implementing verbal messages was found in speed and pause. It is important to note that research on ways to implement such messages in speeches have obvious implications for academic and practice.
