젊은 괴테는 수사학을 잘 알고 활용하면서도 자신의 인물을 통해 수사학에 대한 경멸을 드러낸다. ‘수사학에 대한 경멸을 드러내기’는 원칙적으로 수사적이다. 수사학에 대한 이런 태도는 수사학 탄생기로부터의 전통으로 소크라테스와 플라톤에서도 나타난다. 그렇다면 젊은 괴테의 반수사학은 그가 수사학을 잘 알고 있었음을 역설적으로 말해주는 것이 아닐까? 이 논문에서는 청년 괴테의 독서일기 『일지』를 통해 그의 수사학적 교양을 살펴보고 같은 시기에 쓰인 연설문 「셰익스피어 축일을 기념하여」를 그의 수사적 실천의 한 범례로서 수사학의 규범에 비추어 살펴본다. 만년의 괴테는 그리스와 로마 수사학 사전들을 늘 곁에 두고 참조했다고 고백한다. 괴테의 수사학 수용이 이처럼 청년기부터 만년에 이르기까지 걸쳐 있다면, 그렇다면 괴테의 반수사학적 발언도 수사학의 전통으로 포섭하면서 괴테의 다른 연설과 문학작품 및 자서전적, 비평적 산문에 대한 수사학적 고찰도 의미 있는 연구가 될 것이다.
Abstract
This paper reads Goethe’s reading diary “Ephemerides” as a document of his rhetorical education and then his speech “On Shakespeare’s Day” as an example of his rhetorical practice, analysing his techniques in terms of classical rhetoric. It transpires that young Goethe, even with a good knowledge of rhetoric, showed contempt for it. And he paradoxically made good use of it, too. His kind of anti-rhetorical ambivalence has been in practice part of rhetorical tradition since Socrates and Plato. In his reading diary, likewise, Goethe shows that he did not accept rhetoric as technique in style or so-called ‘rhétorique restreinte’, but as anthropological paradigm including the Genius-Discourse beyond stiff norms. His speech on Shakespeare, on the other hand, is likely to move his audience in grand style, and he produces spontaneity with dissimilatio at the same time. This speech in good proportion means Goethe was an well trained orator. Later Goethe, too, confessed he had Greek and Roman dictionaries of rhetoric always near at hand. Which means his attention to rhetoric covers the whole span of his literary life. Then it will be meaningful to read him, including his anti-rhetorical remarks, from rhetorical point of view.
