본 논문의 목적은 『이반 일리치의 죽음』에 나타난 시·공간적 구성의 특징과 비유를 수사학적 관점에서 분석하는 것에 있다. 이를 위해 우선 키케로의 다섯 규범 중 배열과 관련하여 시·공간적 구성이 지닌 의미에 대해 살펴보았다.『이반 일리치의 죽음』은 순환 및 대칭적 시간 구성과 시간의 흐름 속도에 따라 공간이 축소되는 독특한 구성을 통해 작가의 메시지를 효과적으로 전달하고 있다. 이를테면, 시간적 흐름에 역행하는 순환구조는 죽음과 실존 간의 존재론적인 물음을 던지는 화두로 기능하고 있으며, 대칭적 시간 구성 및 시간의 흐름 속도와 이와 관련된 공간적 배열은 서술 템포의 변화를 통해 이반이 겪는 내면세계의 변화를 효과적으로 전달하고 있다. 또한, 이 작품에 나타난 시간성을 현재를 기준으로 미래만을 고려하는 일상적 시간성과 일상적인 시간 개념에서 벗어나 자신의 본래성을 마주하는 근원적 시간성으로 분류한 후 각각의 시간성에 나타나는 은유와 환유에 대해 분석하였다. 이와 동시에 두 시간성이 상승과 하락과 관련된 지향적 은유(orientational metaphors)와 관련됨을 분석함으로써 이러한 비유가 작가의 메시지를 어떻게 효과적으로 전달하는지를 분석하였다.
Abstract
This study analyzed The Death of Ivan Ilyich through the rhetorical lens of space-time characteristics and metaphor. To conduct this analysis, the “arrangement” aspect of Cicero’s five canons of rhetoric was used to examine the meaning embedded within the novella’s space-time structure. A unique composition in The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the contraction of space that follows the symmetrical and cyclical temporal structure, as well as the speed at which time passes, effectively delivering the author’s message. This can be seen in the cyclical structure, one that goes against the flow of time, which functions to raise ontological questions on the nature of life and death. The symmetrical time structure, the speed at which time flows, and the spatial characteristics changing in sync with temporal changes reflect Ivan’s inner world, thus effectively conveying internal change through variations in the narrative tempo. The concept of time also departs from the common conception of time existing in the present in which one can only consider the future, as time was defined according to the conception of time as a fundamental element through which to confront one’s authentic nature. It is through this conception that metaphor and metonymy within each temporal unit were analyzed. This study also examined how these metaphors effectively convey the author’s message by analyzing the two temporalities, which are both orientational (directional) metaphors related to rising and falling.
