Abstract
This study analyzes Leo Tolstoy’s novel Anna Kareninafrom a rhetorical perspective. Rhetoric is a concept that refers to the art of persuasion, which was originally developed in the democracy of ancient Greece. It primarily reflects the skills employed by orators to persuade their audience. However, rhetoric has been employed for persuading readers in literary genres such as drama, poetry, and novels, extending beyond its origins in oral culture. In particular, elocutio (style) and dispositio (arrangement) have been adapted as various compositional techniques and narrative strategies that enhance the literary quality of works. For example, based on Tolstoy’s perspective, an authentic life entails responding to the truth that manifests itself in the microflow of life shaped by chance in the contingent moments. To reveal this theme, Tolstoy effectively emphasized the truth that emerges through the accidental occurrences in life by juxtaposing events devoid of causal relationships or by arranging independent motifs in a mosaic-like pattern. Notably, these independent motifs function as allegories that offer philosophical reflections regarding the nature of life through a chain of layered metaphors. Therefore, by focusing on episodes such as Vronsky’s horse race, the anecdote of Kitty and Varenka, the anecdote of the painter Mikhailov, and Levin’s haymaking, this study analyzes the manner by which each episode functions as an allegory that shapes the theme of this novel while effectively persuading the readers. Ultimately, the study aims to reveal that each allegory serves as a rhetorical strategy for persuading the readers.
