초록
This paper investigates phonetic realizations of English prosodic phrases by Koreans with references to phrasing places and boundary tones. An experiment was conducted and the corpus was collected from a reading task of an advertisement. Four native English speakers and sixteen Koreans participated in this study. Koreans were categorized into two groups based on their English test scores. The results were as follows: first, prosodic phrasing of syntactically larger units and the use of falling L-L% boundary tones for sentence-final prosodic phrases seem to be relatively easily acquired by Koreans. However, Koreans lacked the ability to form a prosodic phrase to express a theme of discourse or to deliver their intention. Second, unlike the native English speakers’ preference for falling-rising L-H% boundary tones for sentence-medial prosodic phrases, including clauses, phrases, and words, Koreans employed falling tones. The use of L-H% boundary tones for sentence-medial prosodic phrases doesn’t seem to be easily acquired.
