The English alphabet is the phonetic symbol like the Korean alphabet. But the problem is that English spelling does not coincide with sounds. Therefore learners are having difficulties in mastering the confusing symbols with correct sounds from the elarly stages of their learning. In the EFL situation like Korea, the phonics method is has been used successfully for teaching the English letters and sounds and is playing an increasingly important role as a method for quickly mastering them. As the first step in learning English, the phonics method is recommendable especially for the beginning students. The phonics method is also good for repeated practice and intensive training. As communication is the final goal of learning another language, intensive and systematic repetition by the phonics method should be considered important in the beginning stage of learning English.
