Abstract
This study aims to explore public perception and emotional responses to dance content through an analysis of YouTube comments. For this purpose, a total of 217 episode videos of Stage Fighter (Stepa), uploaded on Mnet’s official YouTube channel ‘The CHOOM,’ were selected as research subjects. A total of 35,094 comments were collected and analyzed using text mining and sentiment analysis techniques. The results showed that ‘positive responses (48.3%)’ accounted for the highest proportion of overall comments, followed by ‘neutral responses (34.2%)’ and ‘negative responses (17.5%).’ The major keywords derived from positive comments included best, perfect, and amazing, indicating that the public highly valued the dancers' exceptional skills, choreographic perfection, and overall support for the performers. Conversely, negative responses prominently featured keywords such as understanding, uncomfortable, and disappointed, suggesting that viewers struggled to accept certain aspects of the broadcast direction or found specific scenes difficult to comprehend. Additionally, sentiment analysis on a specific day with an abnormally high number of comments showed a relatively higher proportion of ‘positive responses (57.98%).’ This was attributed to an unexpected mid-season withdrawal of a contestant, which evoked strong emotional reactions from the audience. Notably, even the negative comments were not directed at criticizing the contestant but rather focused on questioning the competition system and editing style. This highlights a crucial factor in shaping audience reactions that would not typically emerge in live stage performances. This study empirically analyzes how dance content is perceived by the public in the digital environment through YouTube comment analysis. The findings suggest the necessity of continuous data collection and refined sentiment analysis research to better understand and respond to the evolving needs of the audience in dance content consumption.
